Display & Design

The Asus ROG Strix Scar 16 features a large 16-inch QHD+ Mini LED Nebula HDR display, offering a crisp resolution and a high refresh rate of 240Hz, ensuring an immersive gaming experience thanks to its powerful CPU and GPU combo. Adding to its visual prowess is the support for Dolby Vision HDR, enhancing the quality of graphics for both gaming and movie watching.

The laptop maintains the rugged aesthetic of its predecessors, complete with customizable RGB lighting to cater to gamer’s preferences. However, the body material is prone to fingerprints, requiring regular upkeep to maintain its neat appearance.

While the Scar 16 may not be the slimmest option on the market, its bulkiness is justified by the top-tier specifications it offers. It provides ample connectivity options with USB Type-A and Type-C ports, along with HDMI and ethernet ports conveniently located for easy access. This design choice not only facilitates efficient cooling through a ventilated back panel but also ensures a clutter-free workspace with all ports neatly tucked away at the side.

The aesthetics of the laptop is impressive. I noticed small stands at the back of the keyboard deck, creating a gap between the laptop and the table, allowing fresh air to circulate effectively. Asus’s air vent design stands out as one of the best in the industry. While the laptop still utilizes a plastic build, the quality feels solid and durable, dispelling any concerns about cheap construction.

The laptop’s lid stays pretty stable, and the hinge feels sturdy overall. However, I did notice a slight creaking noise when opening and closing it. Also, it’s worth mentioning that there’s no privacy cover for the front camera, which would have been a nice addition to a high-end laptop like this.

As for the device itself, it’s on the bulky side, and the charger is hefty too. But personally, I don’t find it bothersome. Gaming setups tend to be bulky, especially custom-built gaming setups. While carrying around the ROG Strix Scar 16 may not be as convenient as a regular laptop, the performance it offers makes it worth it. It’s almost like having a portable gaming PC, which is pretty cool.

Keyboard & Trackpad

The story of the Strix Scar 16 echoes a familiar narrative in the realm of gaming laptops: while the keyboard offers a delightful experience, the trackpad takes a backseat. Though not entirely impractical, its substantial surface boasts a smooth texture for effortless gliding and supports Windows 11 touch gestures. However, the tactile response feels somewhat soft, reminiscent of a sturdy switch, leaving you uncertain about the acknowledgment of your input.

On the flip side, the Chiclet keys, with their low profile, elevate typing to a pleasurable endeavor. With 1.7mm of travel, combined with the well-sized and contoured design of each key, they deliver an exceptional typing experience. Personally, I managed to surpass my typical typing speed, averaging 85 words per minute. Furthermore, as the night wears on and your endeavors persist, the vibrant RGB backlighting illuminates each key with a radiant glow, ensuring uniform brightness across the entire keyboard.

Audio

The ROG Strix Scar 16 boasts quad speakers with Dolby Atmos support, offering a refreshing audio experience. The speakers deliver a balanced audio profile, with a commendable amount of bass that complements the crisp highs and mids. When tested at maximum volume, the speakers performed admirably without any distortion, faithfully reproducing the intricate details of the guitar and vocals while delivering a satisfying thump to the bass.

The audio prowess extends seamlessly to gaming as well, as demonstrated by the seamless handling of Halo Infinite’s operatic soundtrack and chaotic sound effects, which adds a layer of expert precision to the gaming experience.

While it’s important to note that these are laptop speakers and thus may not achieve high-grade warmth, they still offer a sound quality closer to the 14-inch MacBook Pro’s speakers on the spectrum, making them a commendable addition to the ROG Strix Scar 16’s arsenal of features.
